How Do You Develop Great Team Building Ideas?

by admin on November 29, 2009

Team building ideas are not just something that happen overnight automatically. It is a process where someone comes up with a good idea, and it is tried out with maybe just a few people, then tweaked and adjusted as necessary before it is presented as a team development activity for the whole company.

Motivating people is a skill, and not all of your managers will be good at this, if any. Remember that it is common to have managers in a workforce that have had no formal training in management or leadership roles, so that coming up with team building ideas may be next to impossible, and could place a ridiculous amount of unnecessary stress on the manager responsible for organizing any type of corporate team building experience.

So how do you develop these ideas so that they are well received and are useful as a team building exercise? This can be very time consuming, and for many companies it is left to someone to outsource.

There are plenty of programs run by professionals who have a variety of great team building ideas that you can choose from, and they will organize the team bonding course for you, for a fee of course. For many companies, this has proved to be a very satisfactory arrangement.

They do have some input as to what activities are used, but they do not have the full responsibility of planning everything in minute detail while they also work on their probably very busy every day work.

For example, one group arranges for every member of the company to have a drum, and then with guidance, the company is transformed into a drumming orchestra, with unforgettable results. Wish I had thought of that one! Can you imagine what a great feeling it is to be a part of that team activity, producing some great drumming music? It is an activity that any one can do, even the very shy and timid members of a company, and it is probably something that no one in the company has ever done before. It then becomes a talking point and a source of pleasure for the members of that company.

Of course, you could choose a team building idea that is more specific to your particular business niche. Perhaps your company members have a few things in common besides working for the same company, and you may be able to build on this to promote the feeling of being a team member, and involved with its success. Team development is a way to encourage a full commitment to the company and its success in business, while, hopefully having a little fun occasionally with these great team building ideas.
